Approvals Worth Confirming First
Cheap Before, Expensive After
Every item below takes a phone call or a form. Every one of them, discovered after fabrication, means either a modified gate or a stored one. The asymmetry is severe enough that the checking should happen before a deposit is paid, not before installation.
Where the Leaf May Travel
A gate leaf is generally not permitted to swing over a sidewalk, a right of way or the roadway, and on a short setback that rules out an outward swing immediately. Confirming this early frequently decides swing against slide before any other consideration, which is useful because it removes a variable from the design conversation.
Height, Style and Association Rules
A homeowners association may specify maximum height, permitted materials, colour, and whether solid infill is allowed. These rules are not building code and they are enforced separately, so a gate that satisfies the municipality can still be refused. Submitting a drawing for approval before ordering is the reliable route, and it also creates a record if the position later changes.
Sight Lines at the Road
Solid infill near a junction or on a bend can obstruct the view of approaching traffic, and there are usually rules about visibility triangles at an access point. Where solid panels are wanted for privacy, the compromise is often solid on the lower portion with open work above, which satisfies both aims and is worth raising with the fabricator early because it changes the panel design.
Electrical Work
Running a new supply to an entrance is licensed work in most circumstances, and it may require inspection. A gate contractor may carry that capability or may subcontract it, and either is fine, but the responsibility should be explicit in the quote. Discovering after installation that the supply was not installed to a standard that passes is an avoidable and irritating outcome.
Emergency Access
Fire services and other responders need a way through a gated entrance, and local requirements vary from a key box to a specific radio operated receiver. It is a small item of hardware and a legal requirement in many places. It is also, reliably, the thing nobody thinks of until the entrance is finished.
Keep the Paper
Association approvals, permits and inspection records all belong in one place with the gate documentation. They matter at resale, they matter if a neighbour objects later, and they matter if a rule changes and a question arises about whether the installation was compliant when it was built.
